DETENTION
Manville's Detention was Paul Shields, Rodney Matejek, Kevin Shields (no, not that one), Daniel Shields, and Mark Medvetz, and I was foggy about them until I dug up their "Dead Rock 'n' Rollers" single, which was played on every college radio station daily through the 80s (with its now-dated signature line, "What about you, Jim Carroll? All your friends have...what are you waiting for? DO IT!"). They were part hardcore, part garage, and comically mean-spirited in the mold of the Dead Kennedys — themselves an obvious and two-pronged inspiration for "Dead Rock 'n' Rollers." Detention had more songs than that, releasing the Rigor Mortis LP in 1985, so it's surprising how little information on them exists today. Someone's fallen down a bit in keeping up their legacy. But for a natural progression from your punk beginnings, you could do worse than Paul Shields, who now owns a skate park in Flemington.
This is a great mid-80s bill: a trio of iconic NJ harcore bands sporting their logos. And at $1 per band, a bargain.
